CHALLENGE

An Alberta-based energy company was facing equipment shortages due to lengthy turnaround times in their outsourced pig cleaning process. Potential solutions considered by both the energy and service companies were for the purchase of 60 to 90 additional pigs and/or a second custom-built cleaning unit to meet demand.

SOLUTION

SyntheSol, a high loading solvent, engineered as a safe alternative to hazardous solvents was introduced into the cleaning procedure. In addition, Evergreen Solutions identified a third business to haul away the recovered bitumen/oil at no cost for use as fuel in their waste oil burners.

RESULTS

• Pig cleaning times were reduced from 35mins to 10mins – per pig

• Increased turnaround efficiency from 6 to 15 pigs per day

• Previously used flammable, carcinogenic solvents removed from cleaning procedure

• Eliminated need to purchase additional pigs and an additional custom cleaning unit

• The heater used in previous procedure was no longer required saving an additional $600/month in energy costs

• The 95L of bitumen/oil recovered from each cleaning procedure is now hauled away at no charge to the service company, saving an additional $5000/month
